Channelling Explained: What It Means and What to Expect

Channelling: What is it?

In the spiritual practice of channelling, a person often referred to as a “channel” becomes a conduit for messages from higher, divine, or non-physical realms. Angels, ascended masters, spirit guides, cosmic energies, and universal consciousness are a few examples of these divine sources. Receiving healing, wisdom, and insights that are outside the conscious mind’s realm is the goal of channelling.

A person may receive information during a channelling session in the form of words, symbols, visions, or even sensations. They may occasionally write or speak in languages they have never heard of before (a condition called xenoglossy), but they still have the innate ability to decipher the meaning of the message. This goes beyond normal thinking and is frequently perceived as a profoundly intuitive flow. People describe that source in different ways.

The channel lets divine or intuitive wisdom, which frequently manifests as spoken words, writing, art, energy healing, or movement, flow through them naturally rather than through reason or personal thought.

How Do People Believe It Works?

Those who practise channelling usually describe a process of quieting the mind and becoming open to impressions. These might arrive as words, images, feelings, or ideas. Not everyone has the same experience. One person might describe a clear sentence, another a sense or a picture. People find meaning in it through belief and experience. You’re free to hold it lightly, take what’s useful, and set the rest aside.

Channelling Types

  • Verbal Channelling (Trance Channelling)
A spirit or other entity can speak directly through the channel when they go into a light or deep altered state (trance). What was said might or might not be remembered by the channel.
  • Channelling in Writing (Automatic Writing)
Written communications are received; they frequently flow quickly and without conscious planning. This is how many books have been channelled.
  • Intuitive or Conscious Channelling
The individual stays conscious and shares the messages they receive from spirit in real time while maintaining control by using their intuitive senses.
  • Channelling Creativity
Through creative expression, artists, musicians, or dancers can channel inspiration, ideas, or energy; they frequently report feeling “guided” or “taken over by inspiration.”

What Kinds of Questions Can You Bring?

Open questions tend to work better than ones that need a fixed answer. For example:

  • What would help me understand my current situation more clearly?
  • What personal patterns would I like to reflect on?
  • What might help me move forward with greater awareness?
  • What would I like to understand about my spiritual path?

Channelling, Mediumship, Intuition, and Automatic Writing

These terms sound alike, and they overlap. They also mean different things to different people.

Mediumship is usually linked with communication with people who have died. Channelling is broader. It’s understood as receiving or expressing guidance from a spiritual source, which may or may not be a person who has passed. If you’d like to read more, my Mediumship article covers it in more detail.

Intuition is an inner sense or feeling about something. You don’t need any spiritual practice for it, and everyone has some. Automatic writing is writing in a way some practitioners understand as letting words or impressions come through without planning each one. Some people use it as one way of channelling.

Practitioners may understand and combine these in their own ways.

What Can Happen During a Session?

The details depend on the practitioner. In general, a session may include setting an intention, sitting quietly for a moment, asking a question, sharing the impressions that come, and talking through what was shared.

You’ll have time to reflect, and you’re welcome to ask questions along the way. Some people find a session meaningful straight away. Others need a few days with what they heard, and some may not connect with it at all.

Is Channelling Right for You?

Not necessarily, and that’s fine. People hold many beliefs and have different comfort levels. Some find channelling meaningful. Others prefer meditation, quiet reflection, counselling, or another kind of support. You don’t need to believe in channelling to start exploring your own thoughts and questions.

“You don’t need to hear a voice from beyond to listen. Sometimes the clearest guidance is the thought you finally make time for.”

Is It Safe to Channel?

Like any spiritual practice, channelling is effective, but it requires discernment, protection, and intention. Most seasoned channels:

  • They physically ground themselves.
  • Clearly state your intentions (only those of love, light, and the highest truth).
  • Invoke protection (such as angels, guides, or white light).
  • Avoid ego or deceptive energies by exercising strong discernment.

Is There Anyone Who Can Channel?

Yes, everyone is capable. Channelling is a skill that can be acquired over time by anyone, not just “gifted psychics.”

  • Developing your intuition
  • Engaging in stillness and meditation
  • Having faith in your inner guidance
  • Getting in touch with your higher self or guides
  • Keeping a journal of intuitive messages
  • The more you practice, the clearer the signal gets, much like when you tune a radio.

Guidance is only useful if it leaves you freer to choose, never more afraid to.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is channelling in spirituality?
It’s a practice in which a person believes they receive or share guidance from a spiritual source. Different traditions understand it in different ways.

How does a channelling session work?
It depends on the practitioner. A session often includes setting an intention, a quiet moment, a question, and a talk about the impressions that come.

Do I need spiritual experience to explore channelling?
No. Beginners are welcome, and curiosity is enough. You can ask how a practitioner works before you decide.

Is channelling the same as mediumship?
They overlap, but they aren’t identical. Mediumship usually involves communication with people who have died, while channelling is broader.

How can I tell whether a practitioner is right for me?
Look for someone who explains their approach clearly, respects your boundaries, and doesn’t use fear or pressure. Trust how comfortable you feel.

Can I question or disagree with a message?
Yes, always. You’re free to question anything that doesn’t fit and to decide what feels true to you.

How can I book a channelling session with Rohini?
You’re welcome to get in touch to ask about my approach and the sessions available. I’m happy to answer your questions before you decide anything.

“Take what resonates, question what doesn’t, and let the rest go. That’s not doubt. It’s discernment.”

If you’re curious about channelling, you can begin in the way that feels comfortable.

You may wish to learn whether a session is right for you. You’re welcome to get in touch with me, Rohini Maaster, at Mithraa Enlighten and ask your questions first. There’s no pressure to decide.

Or you may feel drawn to learn channelling yourself. I also offer training, so if you’d like to explore the practice for your own development rather than only receive a session, you’re welcome to enquire.

Whichever you choose, trust your own pace and your own judgement.
